Is a dynamic district in Greater London, forming part of the London Borough of Islington, created in 1965 by merging the Metropolitan Boroughs of Islington and Finsbury. One of London’s smallest boroughs, it has around 300,000 residents and is popular with first-time buyers, City professionals, young couples, families, and creative students.
Originally named Gisla’s hill by the Saxons, the area became known as Isledon before adopting its current name in the 17th century. From a modest hamlet, it developed into a thriving village centred around Upper Street and Essex Road. The 19th century brought major growth, with the creation of Islington High Street and the elegant terraces of Barnsbury.
Upper Street remains the vibrant heart of the area, known for its boutiques, restaurants, and nightlife. Camden Passage is a top spot for antiques and unique finds, while Chapel Market offers a traditional street market experience.
Islington is home to City, University of London and London Metropolitan University, and boasts excellent transport links, including ten Underground stations connecting residents to the City and West End.
In recent years, the area has grown increasingly desirable, attracting well-known residents like Lily Allen and Jimmy Carr. Despite its evolution, Islington retains its historic charm and creative, cosmopolitan spirit.
